From Old French nois, from Latin nux, nucem, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *knew-.

Note that used both to mean “nuts (in general)” and “walnuts (in particular)” – compare Spanish carne, meaning both “meat (in general)” and “beef (in particular)”.
