Etymology 2
Of uncertain origin. The name of the plant is the same as the musical instrument orgona (“organ”), perhaps because from the hollow stem of the plant one can make pipes and flutes. Its Latin name Syringa originated from Ancient Greek σῦριγξ (sûrinx) which also meant “shepherd's pipe”. The shrub's dialectal name is orgovány which also had an influence on the naming. [1]
