på tok

1. used with the verb vara (be): wrong, out of place

   Jag insåg direkt att någonting var på tok.

   I immediately realized that something was wrong.

2. used as an adverb to show excessiveness: way, far

   Han dricker på tok för mycket.

   He drinks way too much.

3. used with the verb gå (go): shows that although with good intentions, an action has a bad result: out of hand, wrong, backfire

   Jag ville överraska henne men det gick helt på tok.

   I wanted to surprise her but things went completely wrong.
