1. (literally) A pensioner, recipient of an annual pension; this may be an actual remuneration or rather a gratification for goodwill
2. (historical) A pensionary, major public official receiving an annual fee for his important legal and other services, mainly as city legal counsel and often representative in the estates (assembly)
