From Middle Dutch rike, from Old Dutch rīki, from Proto-Germanic *rīkiją (“realm”), from Proto-Celtic *rīgiom (“kingdom”), from *rīxs (“king”) (compare Irish rí), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs (“king”). Cognates include West Frisian ryk, German Reich, obsolete English riche, Danish rige, Swedish rike, Gothic 𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐌹 (reiki). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin rēx.
