From Proto-Albanian*wripa. Compare Ancient Greek ῥάπτω(rháptō, “to sew together, to stitch”), Lithuanian verpti(“to spin”). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian*reipa, to be connected with Germanic *raipan, *raipaz 'rope', in Old High Germanreif 'rope, cord', Middle Low German rēp(“sling, rope”), Old Norse reipa(“to fasten with a rope”), and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European*roypnós.
