Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly a substratum connection with Albanian tharbët ‎(“sour, acrid”), or from an alteration of Latin fervidus through a hypothetical intermediate *sfearbăd with the prefix s-, from ex-. Other theories include Vulgar Latin roots *subalbidus ‎(“whitish”), *exalbidus, from albidus, or *salvidus, from salvia.
