From Ancient Greek σῆψις ‎(sêpsis, “putrefaction”), from σήπειν ‎(sḗpein, “to make rotten”), from σήψ ‎(sḗps, “a kind of lizard, also a kind of serpent whose bite was alleged to cause putrefaction”).
