Japanese柳葉魚(ししゃも, shishamo, literally “willow leaf fish”) (kanji are ateji, or rather jukujikun), from Ainuスサㇺ(susam), presumably from スス(susu, “willow”) + ハㇺ(ham, “leaf”). “Willow leaf” is due to the fish’s slender shape, similar to the shape of a willow leaf.
