From Proto-Albanian *kśul(V)n-. Cognate to Ancient Greek ξύλον (xúlon, “timber, beam”)[1]. Other possible cognates are Thracian sula (“groove”), Ancient Greek (Attic) ὕλη (húlē, “forest, groove”), or Germanic *sūlō, *sūliz pillar (cf. Old Norse súl, Old Saxon sūl).
