Etymology

From Danish skade ‎(“magpie”) and -it (a suffix or quasi-suffix that was and is used for various birds in Volapük, such as kanerit for "canary" (replaced by kanair), blukit for "sandpiper" or "wagtail", merit for "blackbird" (now changed to merul), pepit for "Bohemian waxwing" (pep is the Volapükian (Volapükish) word for "pepper"), popularly called the pepperbird; compare husskade (which is hus ‎(“house”) + skade ‎(“magpie”)), the Danish word for the European magpie, Eurasian magpie, common magpie).
