From Proto-Albanian *tšārnā, from pre-Albanian *kʷērsneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷr̥snós (“black”) (compare Lithuanian kir̃snas, Russian чёрный (čërnyj), Pashto kī́n ‘left’). Compare also Romanian cioară, Aromanian cioarã, tsoarã, Friulian çore, Tarantino ciola, Sicilian and Neapolitan ciaula.
