From a Vulgar Latin *suflitus, from Latin sufflō, from flō (“to breathe”), or from an alteration or suffix change of sufflātus. Compare Latin the meaning of animus, anima ("soul, also breath") deriving from the Proto-Indo-European root for "to breathe", and cf. also Latin spiritus (“spirit”), from spirō (“breathe”). Compare Aromanian suflit.
