Etymology

For the constituents compare Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 ‎(saēna, literally “a raptor, either eagle or falcon”), Sanskrit श्येन ‎(śyená), Old Armenian ցին ‎(cʿin) on the one hand, and Persian مرغ ‎(morğ) on the other.

Akin to Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬋⸱𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬋 ‎(mərəγō saēnō, “the bird Saēna”), Persian سیمرغ ‎(Simorğ), as well as Old Armenian սիրամարգ ‎(siramarg, “peacock”), in dialects with սին- ‎(sin-) and meaning “a mythical bird”, Classical Syriac ܣܝܡܘܪ ‎(sīmūr, “a mythical bird”), Iranian borrowings.
