From Medieval Latin cultivō ‎(“I till, cultivate”), from cultīvus ‎(“tilled”), from Latin cultus, perfect passive participle of colō, colere ‎(“till, cultivate”), which comes from earlier *quelō, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- ‎(“to move; to turn (around)”).
