Etymology

From teningunum ‎(“the dice”), the dative definite plural form of teningur ‎(“a die”) + er ‎(“is”), the third person singular of vera ‎(“to be”) + kastað ‎(“have been thrown”), the active supine of kasta ‎(“to throw”). Literally "the dice have been thrown".
