From Old Turkic [script needed] (töpü), from Proto-Turkic *tepö (-ü) (“hill, top; top of head”), which, according to the controversial Altaic hypothesis, is possibly derived from Proto-Altaic *t`ĕp`á (“tuft (of hair)”).
Possible relation to Proto-Germanic *tuppaz and Proto-Slavic *dɨb-.
