From Middle French, from Old French terne (“dull, dim”), from Frankish *tarni (“hidden, obscure”), from Proto-Germanic *darnijaz (“concealed, masked, veiled”), from Proto-Indo-European *dher(ǝ)-, *dhrē- (“to hold, hold tight, support”).
