From Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nom, *(s)tern- (“sharp stalk or thorn”), possibly derived from *ster- (“stiff”). Cognate with Bulgarian трън (trǎn), Czech and Slovene trn, Slovak tŕň, Russian тёрн (tjorn) and терние (ternije). Non-Slavic cognates include English thorn and Sanskrit तृण (tṛ́ṇa, “grass”).
