1. (geometry) An Archimedean solid that is isogonal and has twenty-six regular faces (twelve square, eight hexagonal and six octagonal); a great rhombicuboctahedron.

     The H'(S-S) type of linked truncated octahedra and truncated cuboctahedra is analogous to the fluorite structure with the truncated octahedra in the positions of the fluorine atoms and the truncated cuboctahedra in the positions of the calcium atoms.

     A three-dimensional network of linked cavities, each with a truncated cuboctahedron shape (Figure 6.5) through the structure, is thus formed; the truncated cuboctahedra are also space-filling (each shares its octagonal face with six others), forming channels that run parallel to the three axial cubic directions through these large cavities.

Usage notes

The term is considered by some to be "improper" or misleading, because truncation of an octahedron yields a form with irregular faces that must be further distorted.
