1. the nearer, the closer; definite comparative form of tuvs
2. (used as a noun) neighbor, fellow man, fellow human being

   mīliet savu tuvāko kā sevi pāsu!‎ ― love your neighbor as (you love) yourself!

   ir cilvēki, kas par savu tuvāko nekad nebēdā... tie ir zemiski egoisti‎ ― there are people who don't care about their neighbor... they are lowly egoists
