Etymology
Old Swedish uphof, same in Old Danish, from hæfia up, to heave up, to begin; same as Icelandic hefja upp, Middle Low German upheven, German anheben(“to begin”). Also in modern Swedish, häva upp sin röst, begin to talk. However, upphäva has evolved to mean the opposite, to end.[1]
