Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *wīhsilō, from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱs- ‎(“mistletoe”). Cognate with Russian ви́шня ‎(víšnja, “sour cherry”), Ancient Greek ἰξός ‎(ixós, “mistletoe, birdline”), and Latin viscum ‎(“birdlime”).
