2. Used to form the equivalent of expressions according to one's understanding, by one's lights and others with similar meaning.

   Olen ymmärtänyt, että huomenna pääsemme kotiin. (Literally: "I have understood that we'll be going home tomorrow")

   According to my understanding we'll be going home tomorrow.

   Sikäli kuin olen ymmärtänyt, pääsemme huomenna kotiin.

   If I have understood correctly, we'll be going home tomorrow.
