Etymology

From a Proto-Indo-European root *ḱēy(w)-, *ḱyē(w)- ‎(“grey, dark”), with a Baltic extension *-m-. Compare Latvian sirms ‎(“gray”).
The closest cognate is Proto-Slavic *śěrъ, further cognates are Old Irish cīar ‎(“dark”) and Proto-Germanic *hairaz ‎(“grey”).
