Etymology

From Byzantine Greek στάνη ‎(stánē), from Proto-Slavic *stanъ ‎(“lodging”) (compare Bulgarian стан ‎(stan, “camp”), Serbo-Croatian ста̑н ‎(stȃn, “apartment”)). Also Koine Greek βουστάνη ‎(boustánē, “ox byre”).
