Etymology
In view of the abundance of swamps in the vicinity of Xałxał, Martirosyan wonders whether it can be interpreted as a reduplication of խաղ (xał, “marsh, swamp”), typologically comparing ճախ-ճախ-ուտ (čax-čax-ut).
