From Proto-Indo-European *n̥-bʰudʰno- (bottomless), composed of *n̥- (privative prefix) + *bʰudʰno- (bottom), from *bʰudʰmḗn; see there for more. For a similar formation compare Russian без-дна (bez-dna), Ancient Greek ἄ-βυσσος (á-bussos), English bottom-less.
