The origin is uncertain.

According to Martirosyan possibly a substrate word connected with անթայր (antʿayr) and Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ (ánthrax, charcoal).

According to Ačaṙyan, possibly borrowed from a "Caucasian" (Kartvelian?) language: compare Georgian ანთება (anteba, to kindle).
