The original spelling is probably անթ (antʿ), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂nk-ti-, *h₂nk-to- (bending, bent arm), suffixed from *h₂enk- (to bend, curve).

Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(V)nt-h₂-o- and cognate with Lithuanian añtis (bosom).
