Old Armenian

Etymology

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open.

Ałayan derives from the preposition առա- (aṙa-) + *քէն (*kʿēn), from *քեյն (*kʿeyn), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷetən, an extended form of the root *kʷet-, *ket- (battle), + (-i); compare Proto-Celtic *katus (battle) (note especially Welsh cadr (strong, mighty), cadarn (powerful, mighty), Breton kadarn (brave)), Proto-Germanic *haþuz (battle), Old Church Slavonic котора (kotora, quarrel)); see Walde–Pokorny for this root. J̌ahukyan is skeptical of this etymology remarking that the proto-form of these words is usually reconstructed with a *ḱ-, e.g. Pokorny has *ḱat-.
