Etymology 1

The origin is uncertain. According to J̌ahukyan, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(e)bʰro- (strong, mighty) and cognate with Gothic 𐌰𐌱𐍂𐍃 (abrs), Middle Irish prefix abor- (very) and perhaps արբեկ (arbek). See Pokorny for this root, without the Armenian. Alternatively, according to Weitenberg apud Martirosyan, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰōrH-n-, from the root *bʰerH-, and cognate with բուռն (buṙn).
