From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰ-er-, from *h₁eǵʰ- (balk, border). Cognate with Lithuanian ežià (boundary-strip), ẽžeras, Latvian eža, ezers, Russian яз (jaz, fish weir), о́зеро (ózero).
