Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bʰruǵo- or *bʰrugo- and cognate with Ancient Greek φάρυγξ (phárunx) and Latin frumen. Alternatively, Martirosyan hints that we may be dealing with a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word.
