Etymology

Uncertain. Ačaṙyan rejects all proposals and leaves the origin open.

According to Meillet, cognate with Ancient Greek κυλλός ‎(kullós, “deformed, crippled, crooked”). This is accepted with reservation by J̌ahukyan, who derives both from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- ‎(“to bend, crook”), positing pre-Armenian *kʰōl-.
