Uncertain. Ačaṙyan rejects all proposals and leaves the origin open.

According to Meillet, cognate with Ancient Greek κυλλός (kullós, deformed, crippled, crooked). This is accepted with reservation by J̌ahukyan, who derives both from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (to bend, crook), positing pre-Armenian *kʰōl-.
