Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoworo-, from *ǵʰowero-, from *ǵʰew- ‎(“to pour”), with a semantic development ‘to pour, spill, gush’ → ‘bed of torrential stream, ravine’.

Alternatively, and less likely, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoh₁ro- ‎(“gap, empty space”), whence Ancient Greek χῶρος ‎(khôros), Tocharian B kāre ‎(“pit, hole”).
