From Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ter-ieh₂-, a derivative of *méh₂tēr (mother), in the sense of “source”. Cognate with Latin materia and Old Armenian մայր (mayr, cedar). The sense of “den, lair” developed from the sense “woods as dwelling-place for beasts”.
