From Proto-Indo-European *nedo- (reed). Certain kinds of reeds were used for the making of arrowshafts. Cognate with Sanskrit नड (naḍá), Middle Persian nʾd (nāy, reed, cane; tube, pipe, flute, clarion) and Hittite [script needed] (nāta-, reed, arrow, drinking straw).
