Old Armenian

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *portiyo-, from the root *per-, *por- ‎(“to give birth”) whence also Latin pario ‎(“bring forth, give birth”) and Old Armenian որթ ‎(ortʿ, “calf”). Among cognates compare in particular Sanskrit पृथुक ‎(pṛthuka, “boy; the young of any animal”), Ancient Greek πόρτις ‎(pórtis, “bull-calf; boy”) and Latin partus ‎(“birth; offspring”).
