Old Armenian

Etymology

As is already suggested by Nor baṙgirkʿ haykazean lezui, composed of վիզ ‎(viz, “neck”) +‎ -ան ‎(-an). Accepted by J̌ahukyan. For the semantics compare the Old Armenian expression վիզ ամբառնալ ‎(viz ambaṙnal, “to become rebellious, proud, insubordinate”), ընդվզիմ ‎(əndvzim), English stiff-necked, Russian жестоковыйный ‎(žestokovyjnyj). Ačaṙyan unnecessarily rejects this etymology and leaves the origin of the word open.
