Etymology

Ačaṙean derives from Proto-Indo-European *kar- ‎(“stone; hard”), with such cognates as Sanskrit कर्कर ‎(karkara, “hard, firm”), Ancient Greek κάρκαρος ‎(kárkaros, “hard, rough”), Latin cancer ‎(“crab”), Welsh carn ‎(“cairn”). This is accepted by J̌ahukyan. See Pokorny for this root, without the Armenian.

On the other hand, Martirosyan argues for a derivation from a substrate word *kar-, also reflected in the Armenian place name Քարքէ ‎(Kʿarkʿē); see there for more.
