Uncertain. Possibly from the Sanskrit महा- (mahā-), combining form of महत् (mahat) "great" + राष्ट्र (rāṣṭra) ratta (or "Rashtrakuta"), a dynasty that once ruled the area), a clan known as "rāṣṭrika" (found in some of King Ashoka's inscriptions) or "ratha" (chariot). A Sanskritized interpretation of the later writers states that rāṣṭra derives from the Sanskrit word for "nation" or "dominion".
