ㅂ니다 • ‎(mnida)

1. (declarative suffix for sentence-final verbs in the 하십시오체 (hasipsioche, “formal polite”) speech level)

Usage notes

ㅂ니다 (mnida) is used after verbs and adjectives with no finals or ㄹ, which falls out. E.g. 가다 + ㅂ니다 = 갑니다 "goes.", 알다 + ㅂ니다 = 압니다 "knows."

습니다(seumnida) is used otherwise, that is, after verbs and adjectives with finals that are not ㄹ. E.g. 먹다 + 습니다 = 먹습니다 "eats."
