藻玉 (hiragana もだま, katakana モダマ, romaji modama)
Compound of 藻 (mo, “alga”) + 玉 (tama, “ball”), from the way that the seeds often wash ashore.[1]The tama changes to dama as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
