Emerging no later than the thirteenth century in Schleswig-Holstein, the surname is thought to derive from the Middle High German, being intermediate etymon between the Old High German smal and the German schmal, ultimately from the Proto-Germanic *smalaz ‎(“small”), whence the English small, and is thus cognate with the English surname Small.
