Usage notes

This misspelling can arise among children in communities where swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities. It is very dangerous to even casually swim too deep and abruptly surface, because decompression sickness can be fatal. Therefore, it is practical to teach children basic safety rules from a young age, as well as newcomers unfamiliar with these safety rules. However, the term bends may be introduced and spoken without its origin and exact meaning being explained. To uneducated ears, it may sound like a newly-learnt uncountable word, and can be misspelt benze.
