1. (intransitive, or transitive with com or with no preposition) to continue; to go on with (not to stop)

     [...] o único professor presente quando entraram [na sala de aula] era Binns, [...] preparando-se para continuar sua monótona lengalenga sobre a guerra dos gigantes.

     [...] the only present teacher when they entered [the classroom] was Binns, [...] preparing to continue his monotonous explanation about the giants' war.

4. (copulative) to continue; to remain (to retain a given quality)

   Mesmo com o novo governador, os impostos continuam altos.‎

   Even with the new governor, taxes remain high.

5. (intransitive, usually takes an adverb phrase) to extend (to have a given extent)

   Essa estrada continua por uns vinte quilómetros.‎

   This road goes on for some twenty kilometres.
