From Old Norse fyrirbjóða, forboða, from Proto-Germanic *furibeudaną, compare also Middle Low German vorbeden which may have influenced it. Equivalent to för- +‎ bjuda. Cognate with Danish forbyde, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 ‎(faurbiudan), English forbid, German verbieten, Dutch verbieden.
