From Old Irish gorm (“blue”), from Welsh gwrm (“dusky”), from gorsmo-, root gor, warm ("warm colour"), as in Gaelic gar (Stokes). Alternatively, the Welsh term could be from Old English wurma (“purple”), from Proto-Indo-European *wrmi- (“worm”), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to turn, bend”).
