Etymology

From German Low German. Obviously derived from now archaic Imme ‎(“bee”), but there are two theories concerning the details of the development: 1.) From Middle Low German immenkar ‎(“beehive”), which is a compound with Middle Low German kar ‎(“basket”). The component -ker < -kar would then have been secondarily associated with the Low German suffix -ker for occupations (compare Böttcher). 2.) Directly derived from Imme with the mentioned suffix. Cognate with Dutch imker.
